Hugh Myddelton Primary School
Hugh Myddleton School is a 1960’s building in the heart of Islington. TRC were employed by Balfour Beatty Construction under the Islington schools framework. The contract was negotiated with TRC due to our expertise in providing bespoke window solutions.
Originally the project was scheduled to have all of the windows replaced, however, after a design process spearheaded by TRC it was decided that a more economical solution would be to retain the existing frames and to replace all the glass and insulated panels.
All of the glass was replaced using Sun control , Low E to achieve a G value of 0.61 and a U value of 1.2. All of the glass was 6.8 laminated for safety within a 28mm warm edge sealed unit.
All of the openers were sliding sideways on a spiral balance system. These balances were overhauled and new draught proofing was introduced to ensure optimum performance. The existing frames were all repaired using the Repair Care System, which has enabled TRC to give a 10 year Guarantee against further decay.
We replaced all of the timber panels below the glass with insulated panels to increase the U value. We also replaced all of the cedar cladding to the building.
Gym Curtain Wall
Some of the panes of glass within the Gym Curtain wall were over 2.5m high. We were able to incorporate these by using the existing mullions and introducing new transoms to strengthen the system. TRC employed a structural engineer to produce the calculations to ensure the integrity of the curtain wall.
The Majority of the doors were overhauled to include the locks, hinges and opening mechanisms. We ensured that the doors complied with the forces required to open and the security requirements, along with weather sealing. We also supplied and installed new high security DDA compliant double fire exit doors to the curtain wall.
The entire exterior of the school was then painted by TRC. The original colour was white but it was decided to give the school a more modern look and the new colour decided upon was grey.
The contract period was 16 weeks and was undertaken while the school was occupied and during the summer holidays. Extreme care and attention needed to be taken while carrying out the window replacement and window refurbishment so as not to disturb the children during teaching times, and only noisy work was done before and after school and during breaks.
A classroom was decanted for a period of 4 days whilst the works were undertaken and then left clean and tidy for the children to return. During school holiday periods and weekend we supplemented the labour force in order to get rooms completed that could not be decanted i.e. Gym, Dining Room, Kitchen, Staff Room and any special needs classrooms.
This solution provided by TRC saved the school over 200k from the original budget when it was planned to have new windows. Our solution dramatically reduced the need for internal making good and therefore reducing the disruption to pupils.
